Helping LGBTQ+ Seniors with OpenHouse
We recently found out about OpenHouse from a friend of ours in San Francisco, Griffin Gaffney. Griffin has been involved with OpenHouse for a while and was matched with a local LGBTQ+ senior citizen. Over the past year, they've spent a great deal of time together and grown close.
OpenHouse makes many matches like Griffin's. The organization helps LGBTQ+ senior citizens who are experiencing isolation, providing them with crucial community support and engagement. Many senior citizens live in isolation. But for LGBTQ+ seniors, this situation is even more common: many older LGBTQ+ people lost loved ones in the AIDS crisis, or were ostracized from family and friends after coming out.
We have signed up on OpenHouse's website to volunteer and be matched with an LGBTQ+ senior in San Francisco. For those in the Bay Area, we highly recommend getting involved! You can sign up here. For those not in the area, please consider making a donation here.
